Does Yummy Yammy Deserve a “Best Bite” Award for our Roasted Sweet Potato Dips?

So you already love Yummy Yammy sweet potato dips.  Do you think they’re good enough for an award that is based on “foods that taste amazing, while keeping the ingredient list pure and natural—free of artificial ingredients, fillers, and binders”? If you believe we should win, I invite you to nominate Yummy Yammy for the first-ever Best Bite Award.  Six of their categories could apply to us: Vegan Snack (the Fiesta Dips for sure; the Lemon Gingers have honey — some consider honey vegan-enough, …

Celiac Disease and Gluten Sensitivity Now A “Disability”

A new ruling by the Department of Justice states that those suffering from celiac disease and gluten sensitivity qualify as having a disability within the reaches of the Americans with Disabilities Act. As usually happens with this sort of thing, those with the experience are relieved to be taken seriously, and those who have no experience with it think it’s overkill. Many people, me included, are eating less gluten. But that’s a choice. It’s not a medical imperative. I don’t …

Yummy Yammy in Foodie’s Urban Market in Boston

Yummy Yammy Now in Foodie’s Urban Market Foodie’s Urban Market in Boston is our newest store in the Yummy Yammy tribe. I’m so delighted to be part of this cool, bustling business. They have just opened their 3rd store, in South Boston, to go with their Duxbury and South End locations. What I love most is that they opened these stores in spots where there wasn’t a great source of fresh produce and high quality food. Nice job! If you have …

The Beauty of Natural, Wholesome Ingredients

I was making our delicious sweet potato dips the other day, up in Hardwick Vermont at the Vermont Food Venture Center, where I’ve made Yummy Yammy since July 2011. There are so many aspects of making a specialty food, especially one as natural and wholesome as ours, that feeds my soul even as I’m making it for you. One of them is the sheer beauty of the raw ingredients I get to use. It’s a simple photo, but I just …

Yes, I Really Went All the Way to Detroit for Sweet Potato Pie

A few years ago I heard about Sweet Potato Sensations, a Detroit bakery specializing in sweet potato treats, and I’ve been dreaming about going there ever since.  This Christmas I got my wish! We drove from VT to Chicago for a family holiday, and stopped in Detroit “on the way back”. We met Cassandra and her two wonderful daughters, and the irony of this heavenly-smelling bakery is that NONE of them like sweet potatoes. She got into the biz cuz …

Yam Taste Test – Japanese Yam, Jewel Yam, Organic Sweet Potato & Local Organic Sweet Potato

How to decide: Which sweet potatoes or yams should you serve this week? Time for the bake-off!  Best of all, you don’t need to scrub any tubers or wash any dishes. I’ve done it for you…. We start with four different yams/sweet potatoes that have varying shapes, sizes, colors, textures, and tastes. So on this particular day, mid-November 2012, the organic orange-fleshed “jewel yam” sweet potato is the clear winner for flavor, color, and texture. Because of this, my recommendation for …
