Our Last Norwich Farmers’ Market

We were lucky to earn an occasional spot at the Norwich Farmers’ Markets over the past couple of years. It’s an outstanding market, with high standards and eager local shoppers. But — bittersweet — this upcoming indoor winter market on March 9 will be our last. Why? Because we have made our last batch of Yummy Yammy in Vermont, and like most markets the Norwich Market requires vendors to grow or produce your product around here. And next time it …

From Yam Lover to Yampreneur

We live in an area full of interesting people doing fascinating things, whether as part of their work, hobby or passion. Rooted in the belief that everyone has a story to share, Valley Voices at the Norwich Public Library provides a forum to meet some of these people and hear their stories. I am delighted to be the speaker kicking off the library’s second Valley Voices season. I will talk about Yummy Yammy’s recent Kickstarter Campaign and how I have gone from loving …

Rock-Star Sweet Potato Farmers

For four years now I have been buying locally grown sweet potatoes whenever I can for my sweet potato dip company, Yummy Yammy. Why would I pay at least double the price for organically grown yams from Vermont and NH, when I can get them cheaper year round from North Carolina and Louisiana? The main issue is quality, especially at this time of year (see why September through November is such a challenging time to buy sweet potatoes from the …

Video Race: What Would YOU Do to Get YOUR Yummy Yammy?

I love movies. So I made a little funny movie about Yummy Yammy. If you make one on the theme of “What YOU Would Do to Get YOUR Yummy Yammy,” and post it on YouTube and then on here, I will send the first five either an apron or a t-shirt, your choice. Obviously, it has to be in reasonable taste, and I am going to boot any videos I don’t think are appropriate. You only get the prize if I …

How I Started Yummy Yammy

YYFirstSaleDayDWShelf

People ask me all the time why I started this business. Here you go: My Uncle Dan was the reason I tried that single can of yams my mother bought every year for him at Thanksgiving. He was the sweetest man you ever met – a dangerously sweet man – I mean, he asked me if I sang “Good Morning, Dear Teacher” to my first grade teacher every morning, and he meant it. But he fed the squirrels and was …

Sweet potatoes are harvested in the south (Louisiana to NC) from early/mid August til about now. When first harvested, they are called “green” sweet potatoes, meaning they have not yet been cured (they look the same on the …
